The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The outbreak of the ALZ 113 virus resulted in billions of deaths. The technology is out and nature reoccupies inch by inch the human cities. The few people who have survived the virus and the violence, organized themselves in small communities trying to survive.

One such community is the people who live in the ruins of San Fransisco. Their leader is Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) and a secondary leading figure is Malcolm (Jason Clarke). To increase their chances for survival and improve the quality of life, they organize a team led by Malcolm, to repair the hydroelectric dam just outside the city. As they make progress in the forest, they meet with apes. Their leader is Caesar, the brilliant ape we met in the first movie, who does not allow his companions to hurt humans. When people flee in panic, Caesar tell Koba to follow them.

Apes have evolved a lot. At the end of the movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes, we saw them resort to Muir Woods near San Fransisco. Now, their population has increased dramatically and under the orders of Caesar they have their own organized community. We see the apes hunting deers for food. They have an educational system, with the orangutan Maurice teaching the children moral values, sign language and writing in the language of humans. But Caesar is not only a leader. He became a father. Cornelia gave him two sons.

before the dawn of the apesAfter the meeting of apes and humans, fear and strong emotions prevail in both communities. Dreyfus considers apes a threat and in the assembly he tries to rouse the people against them. But he is not yet ready to wage war. So he accepts the proposal Malcolm made, to negotiate with the apes to let humans operate the power station. Dreyfus gives Malcolm a three days deadline for a peaceful solution. On the other side, many apes are in favor of an attack against humans, but Caesar manages once again to appease the spirits. “With war we will suffer, we will lose our home and our family”, he tells them.

Koba states his loyalty to Caesar, though he disagrees with his decision. The experiments and the tortures at the hands of the Gen Sys scientists have filled his heart with hate. He wants to annihilate all humans and to succeed, he will even turn against his kind. Even against Caesar, the one who had rescued him for the labs.

People have guns, rifles and shotguns. Apes are by nature more powerful, they outnumber the humans and their weapons are, for the moment, spears and swords. Smart persons exist on both sides, as are the warmongers. Will humans and apes succeed in living peacefully? Or will they fight till total extinction, trying to eliminate their opponents?

Our impressions and movie review:
Serkis and CaesarRick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, a couple in life and partners in writing the script for the Rise of the Planet of the Apes, sign the script for the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, along with Mark Bomback who stood out as a screenwriter with films like Die Hard 4.0, Wolverine, the remake of Total Recall, Unstoppable, Godsend and more. Andy Serkis and his company Imaginarium Studios are responsible for the effects in the field of Perfomance Capture and they succeeded fantastically! Wetta Digital and Massive software are behind the visual effects and digital creation of a herd of deers, bear and other virtual animals. And for Matt Reeves, the director of this movie, I should tell you that he has already signed for the next film of the Planet of the Apes series, which has been announced to be released in 2016. The Planet of the Apes sage has started!

Movie Quote from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – 2014

Ellie: It was a virus created by scientists in a lab. You can’t honestly blame the apes?
Carver: Who the hell else am I going to blame? It was a simian flu. They already killed off half the planet.

Movie Quote from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – 2014

Foster: You know the scary thing about them? They don’t need power, lights, heat, nothing. That’s their advantage. That’s what makes them stronger.
